This is technical, field and project coordination work of moderate complexity performed in the Transportation Division of the Engineering Department and involving participation in the development and implementation of larger traffic management projects. An incumbent participates with supervisors and representatives of associated external agencies in the development of project scope and objectives on various large traffic management projects related to infrastructure and operational improvement. A Traffic Technician 2 liaises with a variety of external agencies such as ICBC, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and neighbouring municipalities on traffic system infrastructure improvements; investigates traffic problems in response to complaints from internal and external contacts; prepares preliminary designs and layouts for traffic control signal systems and/or system modifications, traffic lanes, road markings and signs. Other responsibilities include overseeing and assisting with the maintenance and repair of traffic signals and street lights ensuring malfunctions are repaired promptly; makes periodic site inspections during installation of traffic signals and relocation of street light poles to ensure correct placement of hardware. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of a certificate program in civil technology including courses related to traffic engineering and traffic signal system design, plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the practices, techniques, methods, and equipment used in traffic engineering operations. Sound knowledge of the municipality’s street layout and by-laws as related to the work performed, and of traffic engineering design principles and practices. An incumbent will have the ability to monitor and inspect the work of independent contractors for compliance with project terms of reference and schedules and to resolve minor complex problems in the field; to review plans, investigate issues, collect, summarize, analyze and interpret data and prepare reports complete with recommendations, and to prepare related maps, drawings and estimates. A Traffic Technician 2 will monitor the operations of traffic signals and to oversee and assist in the maintenance, repair and installation of traffic signal systems; deal directly with the public in handling complaints and responding to enquiries. A valid Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
This is a Temporary Full Time position until March 31, 2025.
