The City of Burnaby is seeking a professional skilled in carpentry and cabinet making work, involving the use of a variety of tools in the performance of advanced carpentry and specialized related tasks. An employee of this class performs the more skilled work involved in such tasks as building construction, office furniture construction and similar cabinet making duties, and may supervise assistants performing similar work. An incumbent constructs and repairs a variety of buildings and building additions; performs cabinet-making tasks both in the carpenter shop and in the municipal offices; designs and builds a variety of wooden equipment used in public; cuts and installs window glass; makes estimates of time and materials needed for assigned carpentry tasks; supervises carpenter assistants in advanced tasks. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification plus considerable general experience at the journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry; of hazards and safety precautions of the trade; of the requirements of the various departments regarding equipment design. Ability to plan and construct a variety of specialized wooden structures; to perform skilled cabinet making tasks; to read and work from blueprints and sketches. Skill in the use and care of all tools essential to woodworking. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia and Certificate of Qualification- Carpenter is required.
