This is complex technical field and office work of an electrical engineering nature at the sub-professional level. In this role, you will facilitate traffic and transportation projects and asset management in Burnaby by preparing and reviewing design layouts, detailed drawings, specifications and related data for City infrastructure, making field inspections, and completing calculations as necessary. You will check designs submitted by consultants for technical adequacy, scope of work, and conformance to City standards and specifications, and make recommendations for modifications or drawing refinement. You would also review applications from external agencies to install or relocate traffic signals, street lights, communications and other infrastructure such as utility mains, ducts or lines, to ensure compliance with design and service standards as set by the Engineering and Planning departments.  You would issue permits as necessary, liaise with Operations for works completed by City crews, conduct field inspections of work sites, and prepare notes, maps, reports, and calculations as required. Performs related work as required. 

Qualifications include graduation from a diploma program from an Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering plus sound related electrical design experience, eligibility for registration as an Applied Science Technologist or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  Sound knowledge of applicable design criteria, approved products, standards and methods; of electrical engineering practices, procedures, functions and of the rules and regulations applicable to the Transportation division's functions; and of related signal construction and commissioning methods and materials and of inspection methods and procedures. Working knowledge of the functions and permitting requirements of City departments and external agencies as related to the work performed. Ability to prepare designs for specific public works services and to review drawings for technical accuracy and conformance with applicable standards and specifications; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and handle public inquiries and provide technical information and assistance; to prepare, read, and interpret plans, specifications, contract documents, and related materials; and to direct the work of City electricians, contractors and drafting staff. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.

The ideal candidate will be available for shifts weekdays between 8:00 am and 4:45 pm.
