This is skilled technical and mechanical work at the Journeyman level in the repair, maintenance, servicing and overhaul of a large variety of Fire Department vehicles, apparatus and equipment to meet operational requirements and standards. In addition, the Mechanic - Fire Department makes modifications to equipment, fabricates special equipment and assists in designing and constructing special apparatus as required. Prepares and maintains work records and assists a supervisor in the training of one or more trades apprentices as required. Attends major alarm fires as required to ensure proper operation of firefighting equipment. Acts for a supervisor within defined limits during the latter's absence. Considerable independence of judgment and action are exercised in performing the mechanical and technical aspects of the work and the more unusual and complex problems and/or policy matters are referred to a Supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of effectiveness of skilled trades and technical services rendered. Attention to detail and accuracy is necessary. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include high school graduation supplemented by completed apprenticeship in the mechanical trade, ideally in Commercial Transport or Heavy Duty, and courses in gas and electrical welding, sound related Journeyman experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Welding experience in GMAW in steel and aluminum, and TIG in both aluminum and stainless steel are an asset. Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification or experience will be considered an asset. British Columbia CVIP certification is an asset. Basic keyboarding skills, Word, Excel and SAP experience would be an asset. Sound knowledge in electrical diagnostics and repairs with exceptional attention to quality is required as well as the ability to read and understand electrical schematic blueprints. Familiarity with Weldon VMUX multiplexing systems would be an asset. Requirements include a BC Red Seal Certification in Commercial Transport Mechanics or Heavy Duty Mechanics, a valid Class 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement and a safe driving record.

Note: The successful candidate must successfully complete the City's physical Firefighter training and associated medical clearance at the earliest available opportunity.

Schedule: Must be available to work 7:30am to 5:30pm on a rotating schedule from Monday to Friday. Must be available on call 24/7 on a rotational basis as well.
