Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is looking for Kayak Instructors to provide lessons to children and adults. Duties include ensuring participants kayak in a safe and enjoyable environment; and planning creative and interesting lessons that incorporate kayaking skills based on the Ocean Kayaking Rescues and Recoveries program. The kayak program operates out of Barnet Beach, Deer Lake Beach and City of Burnaby swimming pools.  Programs include group and private lessons and guided tours for youth and adult participants, as well as day camps for children.

Hours of work per week are dependent on the kayak program schedule and registration levels.  This is a casual position that offers flexible hours between April and October.  This opportunity is suitable for candidates who are available some evenings and weekends and who want to supplement their current income.  Candidates must be available to work most weekends, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM in July and August.

Qualifications include:

  • Strong kayaking skills and previous instruction experience with a wide variety of ages.
  • Experience in customer service and in leading recreational programs is preferred.

Required certification:

  • SKGABC Assistant Overnight Guide or Paddle Canada Level 1 Certification.
  • Valid Wilderness First Aid or equivalent 20+ hour First Aid certification with CPR Level C
  • Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5.
