This volunteer position is available in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge.



The Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) offers mobility, independence and safety to seniors and those recovering from illness or surgery in their own homes.  The Equipment Technician volunteer ensures that clients receive equipment that is of the highest standard of safety by inspecting, cleaning and disinfecting equipment and by making adjustments and repairs as required. 



Repairs and Maintenance

  • Systematically inspects equipment according to guidelines and identifies repairs or maintenance required
  • Performs routine maintenance according to set standards and procedures, or as directed by supervisor
  • Replaces broken or worn parts as needed and removes usable parts from irreparable equipment for reuse
  • Operates hand and power tools in accordance with proper procedures

Cleaning and Disinfecting                                                                                                                 

  • Cleans and disinfects returned equipment according to Red Cross standards and procedures
  • Uses chemicals in accordance with WHMIS regulations
  • Observes routine precautions in the handling of equipment including the use of personal protective equipment and good hand hygiene practices.
  • Operates reprocessing equipment in accordance with proper procedures

Inventory Control 

  • Ensures all equipment is labeled and numbered according to inventory control and brand standards
  • Completes Product Incident Reports according to Red Cross procedures
  • Ensures equipment is stored safely in the warehouse
  • Documents equipment inspection and repair as directed by supervisor
  • Carries out shipping and receiving of equipment as required


Participates in disaster planning, preparation and response, as required

Contributes to a healthy and safe working environment

Performs other duties, as required




  •        Mechanical aptitude with experience in using power tools, working with parts and operating machinery.
  •        This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check and a satisfactory vulnerable sector check
  •        ​Depending on the location, a clear driver's abstract may be required



  • Interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to handle interactions with colleagues required
  • Able to communicate in English required;  basic English speaking and writing skills considered 
  • Reliable and able to work closely with a supervisor and as a member of an effective team
  • Basic computer skills
  • Current generic WHMIS certification, or willingness to take training
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment of up to 50lbs



  • Fluency in a second language
  • Experience working with a diverse population
  • Current Standard First Aid certification, or willingness to take training
  • General knowledge and understanding of health equipment



  • The majority of the work is performed in a warehouse space that is mostly clean and comfortable
  • This position involves long periods of standing and frequent reaching and bending
  • The hours of work for this position may vary but are generally four hours per week, either mornings or afternoons from Monday to Friday. Weekday evenings or Saturday shifts may be available in some locations Available shifts may vary by location.
  • Personal protective equipment will be supplied, as required.  CSA Grade 1 footwear may be required with partial reimbursement of cost.
