The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians,  as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a summer student for the position of Assistant, Volunteer Engagement and Community Outreach. Reporting to the Manager, Volunteer Experience and Engagement, BC and Yukon, this position supports community engagement activities with the goal of building the volunteer teams of local Red Cross programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with community outreach and other aspects of the recruitment process for volunteers in accordance with policy and procedures, including hosting tables at events, presenting to groups, following up with potential volunteers, promoting volunteer opportunities through social media, distributing resources such as posters in the community, etc.
  • Communicate with community organizations (ie clubs, student groups, professional associations) to ensure understanding of the value of volunteering and the application processes.
  • Assist with data entry in regards to following up with individuals and with research as it relates to activity tracking and evaluation.
  • Assist Volunteer Engagement team with special projects as assigned.
  • Provide administrative support for the Volunteer Engagement department locally, as well as to other offices in the BC & Yukon region.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as required to maintain a healthy and safe working environment

Qualifications

Applicants must also meet the criteria established by Service Canada funding, which includes:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations

Education and Experience:

The minimum qualifications for this position include completion of secondary education (Grade 12), and a minimum of one (1) year of job related experience, or a combination of education and experience.

Abilities and Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work with little supervision
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Attention to accuracy and detail
  • Ability to work alone and within a team
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • A positive attitude with openness to new challenges

Assets:

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Post-secondary academic experience in Business, Social Sciences, Global Studies, Public Administration
  • Experience volunteering with groups
  • Experience working or volunteering in a customer service role
  • Knowledge of local community
  • Leadership experience
  • Fluency in a second language

Working Conditions

  • Typical work hours are during the business day Monday to Friday. Some flexibility is required for participation in community engagement events.
  • Some local travel for Community Outreach activities.
  • This position requires a successful Canadian criminal record check
