Assistant Technician, Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP)

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a summer student for the position of Assistant Technician in the Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP). Reporting to the Equipment Supply Associate, HELP, or designate, the Technician Assistant cleans and repairs health equipment at the HELP distribution centre and assists with delivery of equipment to clients’ homes. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Cleans and disinfects health equipment, according to standards.
  • Assists with maintaining health equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and bath seats according to standards.
  • Assists with equipment malfunctions and may help with repairs, following manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Documents repairs and maintains up-to-date equipment records in inventory management system.
  • Assists with transportation of equipment between HELP sites.



Education and Experience:

Completion of Grade 12 and some post-secondary education in a related field, and a minimum of one year of experience working with hand and basic power tools, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


This position is conditional on funding through Service Canada and the following criteria established by Service Canada, which includes:

  • Must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations


Abilities and Skills:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 lbs.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems of a technical nature
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Outlook and data entry/database skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills and client service skills
  • A valid Provincial Class 5 Driver’s Licence


  • Training in health equipment repair
  • Experience working with volunteers and diverse populations


Working Conditions

  • Casual hours as needed based on operational requirements - typically 7 hour daytime shifts Monday to Friday.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • This position requires a successful Canadian criminal record check, a vulnerable sector check and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
