Reporting to the Chief People Officer, or their designate, the Director, Health & Safety has the opportunity to play an influential role in shaping the Health & Safety function within the Canadian Red Cross at a very important time in the organization’s history. 

The Director creates and leads a team of Health & Safety practitioners working in partnership with geographic and programmatic leaders, and other People Services Specialist functions to deliver on short- and long-term plans in support of the organizational Health and Safety strategy and the achievement of organizational HS objectives.

The position will actively monitor health and safety legislation, trends provincially and nationally to inform CRC HS policy, practice and services.  The Director will provide strategic and day-to-day leadership ensuring programs, policies and processes, support and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

In preparation for disaster response, the Director, Health & Safety ensures the team is ready to surge (personnel, processes, systems) and in times of active disaster response, and may provide People Services leadership on the National Disaster Coordinating Team (NDCT), Provincial Disaster Coordinating Team (PDCT), and Field Operations Team (FOT), or extended coverage for business continuity during the response.

In this role you will:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of CRC strategic direction, programs and workforce priorities and understands how to leverage the collective People Services team to meet those needs and priorities.

  • Work with clients, HS Team, and People Services Specialist functions to develop operational objectives and workplans for the Health and Safety function that align with the organizational strategy while being mindful of people services resources and corporate priorities.

  • Be Responsible for standardizing, managing, coordinating and overseeing the implementation of all Health and Safety initiatives, policies, training, reporting and processes.

  • Develop a proactive and preventative common approach and service level for PS Health & Safety across all programs and geographies.

  • Develop and ensure completion of program safety audits and inspections; ensuring compliance with legislation.

  • Provide leadership to the Health & Safety team, including setting goals and expectations, supporting high level performance, recognizing success and cultivating a strong department.

  • Oversee the H&S accident and incident reporting in collaboration with legal and risk.

  • Work with Provincial leads to ensure that all reporting is completed and submitted in a timely manner to meet legislative requirements and that claims management is in place.

  • Support root cause analysis of incidents (including near misses) and implementation of new processes, practices, training/retraining as follow up and prevention of future incidents.

  • Ensure effective tools, policies, processes, and resources are in place to ensure efficiency and compliance.

  • Continuously monitor Provincial legislation environments and maintain professional development in order to ensure currency with HS legislation, trends, best practices and new innovations.

  • Keep the broader People Services team informed of HS operational activities and requirements.

  • Participate as an active member of the Senior People Services leadership team.

  • Build a talented, flexible and highly performing team of employees and volunteers by understanding the needs of the client and the resources of the broader People Services team, applying sound management practices, providing opportunities for development, facilitating communication and information sharing; and leading by example in a matrix structure.

We are looking for somebody with:

Education and experience

  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline or a combination of relevant education and experience.

  • A minimum

  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), an asset.

  • Keen expertise and practical knowledge of the full range of strategic Health & Safety programs, services, delivery models and metrics to accelerate individual and organizational performance.

  • Experience (either on staff or as a senior volunteer) with national, service-based, non-profit organization is an asset.

  • Adept in working in ambiguous situations and ability to reprioritize tasks and work differently in response to unexpected changes in priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong facilitation and communication skills to influence and build consensus across the organization.

  • Demonstrated fluency, both spoken and written, in English; French is a strong asset.

  • Commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement.

  • Successfully complete an Enhance Police Identification checks and/or vulnerable sector check;

Working conditions

  • The majority of the work is performed in a work from home environment.

  • May, on occasion, be required to work non-traditional hours, especially if in a disaster response.

  • Collaboration within a virtual team.

  • Travel to other offices across Canada may be required.
