Are you looking for an incredibly rewarding experience and opportunity?  Come join us!  The Canadian Red Cross is looking for physicians to join our emergency response operations in each of our provinces.

 

The CRC seeks to fill the gaps in the planning and delivery of emergency COVID-19 testing and/or mass vaccinations and to improve access to underserved and under-resourced populations, such as Indigenous communities, remote communities, homeless, migrant workers or other high-risk populations.

 

Reporting to the Site Manager and under the technical leadership of the Global Health Unit, these clinical specialists will deploy to different clinical settings in their province and/or across Canada. These settings include working with the COVID-19 Testing Assistance Response Team (CTART), vaccination, hospital / clinical surge, support to quarantine/isolation sites, contact tracing, and epidemic control support to local health authorities. The role will include providing direct clinical care to patients.

In this role you will:

  • Train, mentor, and monitor appropriate auxiliary personnel as required
  • Participates in COVID-19 testing set-up, design, preparation of site, and supports relevant stakeholders in performance of duties
  • Support any new or changing procedures for testing as best practices are modified/ changed according to research and approved by local health authorities
  • Responds appropriately to any emergency before, during, or after the COVID-19 testing procedure, including potential referral for follow-up care.
  • Ensures appropriate patient monitoring and advice is provided following vaccination prior to discharge in accordance with P/T health authority protocols
  • Provide clinical support to other CRC clinical services e.g. hospital / clinical surge, support to quarantine / isolation sites, contact tracing, epidemic control and other operations as requested
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge base and technique for performing the tests and administering the vaccines, using guidelines agreed upon by the provincial/ territorial health authority.

 

We’re looking for:

  • Medical degree with at least 1-year clinical experience
  • Current professional registration in one province in Canada is required
  • Fluency in English and in Quebec fluency in French is required. Bilingual is preferred.  
  • Professional certification or post-graduate qualification in public health, global health, tropical medicine/nursing, epidemic prevention and control, or another relevant field is an asset
  • Able to travel on short notice to other destinations within the province and potentially across Canada for periods of several weeks (2 -6 weeks) is a requirement 

 

Working Conditions:

For Field based positions, difficult and demanding both physically and psychologically working conditions are expected including the following:

  • Due to dynamic nature of an emergency and proximity to epidemic/ pandemic affected area, issues with access and mobility and strict protocols and procedures.
  • Very basic living conditions
  • Long hours of work in demanding context with limited resources
  • Stressful rapidly changing environment.
  • The ability to work in a high risk, fluid and evolving situation may be required, as is the ability to work in stressful and often ambiguous conditions.
  • Must complete screening by the Travel Health Team
