Description

In accordance with Saint Elizabeth’s, Vision, and Values, the Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional care for residents in St Thomas, their families and staff members. The Chaplain functions as an integrated member of the inter-disciplinary team and provides spiritual leadership within the facility. The Chaplain provides spiritual care to people of all faiths, respectful of their unique journey and the interweaving of health, cultural, religious and/or spiritual traditions. The Chaplain encourages the development and integration of an individual’s own spiritual resources and promotes expressions of healthy spirituality. The Chaplain establishes supportive relationships with residents and faith community members to build a network of spiritual and religious resources for residents and families.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates visits and responds to referrals for spiritual care of residents and their families.
  • Establishes a supportive, pastoral relationship.
  • Gathers information relevant to spiritual/religious history.
  • Provides initial grief and bereavement support to families and makes referrals for on-going bereavement support.
  • Facilitates meaningful memorial opportunities for residents/staff.
  • Assesses emotional, spiritual/religious and cultural needs and resources.
  • Provides a pastoral presence and support to staff as required.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Divinity or Theological Studies
  • Membership with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC/ACSS) required
  • Basic Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE). A minimum of two additional units of Advanced SPE with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred. Training needs to be provided by an accredited Canadian Association for Spiritual Care training facility or its equivalent.
  • Willingness to seek Specialist standing with CASC or equivalent professional certification preferred.
  • Minimum of one-year related ministry experience in a care setting required.
  • Knowledge of and ability to provide spiritual care for residents, including ability to spiritual care for seniors and those with dementia.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to work in a multi-faith, multi-cultural and inter-disciplinary setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Bilingualism in French is an asset
  • Ability to be non-judgmental, maintain confidence, and affirm individual worth.
  • An ability to deal with conflict and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to personal and professional integration, as well as spiritual, psychological and emotional integration.
  • Ability to listen, counsel, and be present.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to spread hope and happiness by honoring the human face of health care
