The Human Resources Business Partner provides trusted consultation, direction, guidance and coaching support to business leaders and employees within a heavily unionized organization.  They act as the first point of contact for clients and work collaboratively with operations and subject matter experts to ensure optimal employee and labour relations management in alignment with corporate goals, objectives, policies, applicable legislation and best practices.


Employee Relations (50% of time)

  1. Develops and maintains effective partnerships with designated business leaders,

  2. Serves as a trusted HR advisor, providing proactive HR guidance, direction and support on a full range of HR services

  3. Assists business leaders with performance and discipline management

  4. Reviews, directs and administers the accommodation process, disability management, attendance management and injury/illness reporting, WSIB claims and appeals

  5. Conducts timely and thorough investigations including participating in fact-finding meetings, preparing interview questionnaires, recommending approved courses of action and preparing reports, related correspondence and presents summary of findings

  6. Provides consultation on policy interpretation, employment standards and other regulatory requirements

  7. Maintains expert working knowledge of environmental factors influencing the business (I.e., HR legislation, best practices trends)

  8. Applies HR expertise and a deep knowledge of the business to resolve complex employee relations issues

Labour Relations (25% of time)

  1. Provides expert knowledge, support and guidance on labour relations matters arising from the administration, interpretation and communication of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and employment legislation

  2. Makes knowledgeable recommendations to proactively identify and mitigate employee and labour relations issues

  3. Manages all stages of the grievance process, including conducting grievance meetings, preparing responses and negotiating settlements

  4. Creates arbitration briefs and provides support throughout the arbitration process

  5. Participates and provides negotiations support

   General HR Support (25% of time)

  1. Works with operations to develop accurate and up to date job descriptions for review at job evaluation; participates in job evaluation

  2. Collaborates and acts as a lead in health and safety initiatives

  3. Participates and/or leads employee engagement, appreciation and recognition events

  4. Compensation and Benefits management

  5. Provides input for recruitment and retention for designated client groups

  6. Participates and provides HR input on the strategic plan

  7. Provides HR project support

  8. Coaching and mentoring the HR team

  9. Other duties, as required


  1. Human Resources Degree or equivalent; CHRL an asset

  2. Full understanding and practical experience in all HR functions

  3. Proven work experience as a trusted HR and LR advisor; 1-3 years’ experience

  4. Self-starter, highly organized, ability to prioritize, strong attention to detail and goal oriented  

  5. Ability to handle situations professionally with sensitivity, confidentiality, diplomacy and tact

  6. Excellent communication and people management skills; must be a team player

  7. Solid knowledge of the relevant policies, labour law, employment standards and other regulatory requirements as well as the provisions of the collective agreement

  8. Practices continuous learning by keeping abreast of human resources knowledge

  9. Proficiency in MS office, including: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

  10. Flexibility in work schedule to work weekend or evenings, as may be required
