Oil Barge Mechanic

Description

The Mechanic (oil barges) has primary accountability in coordinating, overseeing and performing ongoing mechanical maintenance and repairs on Seaspan tank barges, ensuring that these vessel’s mechanical systems are properly maintained and are in good running condition.

Duties/Accountabilities

Facility Operations

  • Facilitates repairs on barges at Seaspan facilities, which involves the organization, scheduling (vessels, people, resources) and monitoring of dockside operations. Ensures proper organization and effective implementation of the service schedules causing as little down time as possible on the vessels.
  • Supervises repairs done by subcontract, supplier and shipyard employees to ensure quality assurance is adhered to and that any signs of problems are detected early on.
  • Assists with the ordering and supply maintenance of parts and equipment necessary to keep the daily operations of the tank barge fleet running smoothly and efficiently.
  • Works with vendors, contractors (both trades and equipment maintenance contractors) and suppliers in regard to specialized maintenance and repairs. Maintains a good understanding of these external parties’ capabilities and builds rapport with them.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with the company’s safety policy and all applicable rules and regulations are adhered.

Offsite Repairs

  • Responds to troubleshooting requests. Understands and provides initial diagnosis to the problem via phone communications. Based on the nature and the severity of the problem, determines the priority and the most practical and/or suitable solution to remedy the problem, weighing in the effects on crew safety and possibility of further equipment damage.
  • For more critical circumstances, in consultation with the Superintendents coordinates the vessels to a suitable location, organizes and conducts reapirs to the equipment.
  • When required, maintains an on-call rotation for running repairs on vessels outside of the regular work schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 education plus post-secondary courses in management and leadership skills
  • A minimum of 5 years hands-on mechanical and shipboard engineering experience including shore based ship maintenance and repair experience. Experience working as an onboard Engineer is an asset
  • Qualification as a heavy duty diesel mechancic, mill wright or 4th Class Marine Engineering Certificate

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Excellent, mechanical, steel working and electrical tradesman skills. Knowledge of welding is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Knowledge of marine emergency procedures and other applicable regulations
  • Understanding of union contracts and their terms and conditions
  • A valid class 5 driver’s licence
  • Knowledge of vessel operations and the requirement of the towing industry is an asset
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft office programs is an asset
