Trades Development Supervisor (Pipe)

The Pipe Trades Development Supervisor reports to the Director, Trades Workforce Development and is responsible for workforce manning, training and development, and improving people management practices for trade personnel.  This role provides trades-specific input and knowledge to pipefitting and welder operations and influences primarily by coaching General Supervisors and unionized, pipefitters, steamfitters and pipe welders, recommending solutions or corrective action plans.  This position requires regularly liaising and collaborating with Trade Supervisors, Human Resources, HSE, and Quality & Accuracy Control. 

Duties/Accountabilities

  • Assists with identifying appropriate workforce manning requirements and works with Area Managers to ensure correct staffing levels.
  • Identifies training and development needs for General Supervisors, Pipefitters, Welders and Apprentices within the pipe department.
  • Provides performance feedback on Chargehands, Journeymen and Apprentices as required, in partnership with Area Managers and General Supervisors.
  • Reviews performance data, solicits feedback from trades and selects target processes for trade specific process development.
  • Ensure trades workers adhere to regulatory procedures and standards and statutory bodies regarding inspections, tests, and specifications.
  • Responsible for keeping up-to-date on new trade technology, certifications, methods and procedures; maintains and develops training material accordingly.
  • Leads various workplace investigations including post-incident, respect in the workplace, and general misconduct.
  • Supports General Supervisors with personnel management including advising on appropriate corrective actions, promoting consistency of absence management and disciplinary processes, and overseeing completion of Drug & Alcohol Checklists.
  • In collaboration with Ability Management, supports General Supervisors in identifying appropriate assignments for employees requiring accommodation.
  • Participates in Grievance, Union Management, and Collective Bargaining meetings, as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Pipe trade certification and/or qualifications for pipe welding or College degree in related field. Multi-ticketed is an asset.
  • Minimum 4 years of related work experience in an industrial, maintenance or manufacturing environment, or advanced education in a related field with 2 years related work experience.
  • Minimum 1-year supervisory experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of production responsibilities specific to heavy manufacture/industrial (pipe welding, pipefitting, mechanical, rigging).

  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiations skills to resolve disagreements quickly and effectively, bringing a problem-solving attitude to conflicting approaches.
  • Commitment to safety and quality and demonstrated experience in the application of behavioral based safety.
  • Appreciation and understanding of the value of diversity within a team.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products and web-based applications.
