This strategy is based on understanding the experiences and needs of the Black communities' we serve, and using these perspectives to inform the delivery of responsive and effective programs and services.  Through this commitment, for this position we strongly encourage applications from people ages 18-25 who identify as either Black, of African descent or origin or Caribbean.

Reporting to the Community Safety Unit Field Supervisor, Cadets will participate in an apprenticeship-style program to gain insight and experience in community engagement and law enforcement.

Cadets will acquire practical knowledge, skills and experience working with a diverse population and enrich their experience in diversity and cultural sensitivity.

The Cadets will build leadership skills, set and achieve goals, and develop customer service skills. They will have the opportunity to build strong relationships with TCHC staff and other stakeholders and have hands-on experience working for a social housing provider. Cadets will learn about working in a healthy, diverse and respectable environment. 

All successful Cadets will participate in a five-week formalized training course and programs in-class and on-hands.

What you’ll do

  • Cadets shall perform duties as lawfully assigned and shall be accountable to their supervisors and other members as so designated.
  • Provides administrative assistance to Staff Sergeants, including but not limited to filing reviews and compiling case packages and courier duties.
  • Assists Special Constables and  Community Safety Advisors with planning, organizing and attending community events and functions(e.g., community picnics, barbeques, school and community meetings and other TCHC community events).
  • May assist the Special Constables with community complaints and inquiries.
  • Assists with community service initiatives and displays cultural competence.
  • Attends and participates in community and staff meetings as required.
  • Responds to inquiries, files documents and performs data entry when necessary.
  • Assists with hosting information booths if and when required.
  • Works with Community Safety Unit to assist with room set up for events or training (i.e., equipment installation).
  • May assist Special Constables with Community Engagement.
  • Exposure to various CSU functions including dispatch, court, parking, tenancy management, etc.
  • May observe Special Constables in community and tenant interactions.
  • Helps with preventative maintenance equipment utilized in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Distributes bulletins at schools (e.g., colleges, universities, high schools), community centres, and employment centres
  • Maintains, repairs and tests equipment when required.
  • Handles the ordering, stocking and maintaining supplies as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

What you’ll need

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • No experience required. Must be a youth between the ages of 18 and 25. Over 25 years of age candidates may be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are residents of a TCHC neighbourhood (i.e., Weston, Rexdale, Mount Dennis, Morningside,  Flemingdon Park, Jane & Finch, Thorncliffe Park,  Eglinton East, Regent Park etc).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff internally and externally.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and demonstrate initiative in the performance of work.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Ability to read, speak or write in a second language would be an asset (not required but desired).
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team, and able to maintain a positive learning environment.

PLEASE NOTE  - A police background check will be required (which includes a fingerprinting check). TCHC will pay the cost of this screening to reduce any financial barriers.
