Land Acknowledgment

Both the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum were built on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg, on land that has held, and continues to hold –  great historical, spiritual, and sacred significance. The Museums respect and honour the enduring presence of the Algonquin people and strive to ensure that this is reflected in their work.

Truth and Reconciliation

Reconciliation and relationships with Indigenous communities have been at the core of the Museums’ work for decades through repatriation of cultural material, collaborative models of exhibition development, and community-centred projects. The Museums acknowledges their roots as a colonial institutions and strives to advance reconciliation through a continued recognition of Indigenous rights. Through the Framework for Indigenous Relations, the Museums have redefined their
commitment to Indigenous Peoples across Canada and have created an action plan that aligns with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action. With transparency, accountability, and shared authority as key principles, the Museums are transforming their practices, policies, and processes to better serve Indigenous communities and the larger Canadian public. Learning from the past, listening to and collaborating with Indigenous Peoples across the country and focusing on Indigenous perspectives and voices, will enable the Museums to further this important work, while creating respectful and welcoming spaces for Indigenous staff members and visitors alike.
