Job Title              Labourer, Trails and Cemetery

Wage                  $21.98 - $23.77 (2025)

Reports To           Supervisor, Trails and Cemetery Operations

Department         Community Services

Location              Parks and Recreation – Cemeteries and Trails

Hours                 Seasonal April to October. Normal working hours are 40 hours per week. Must be willing to work varied hours: day, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours.

Other                  Travel throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes in accordance with job requirements and work locations may vary

                  

Job Description

Specific to this role:

General duties:

  • Assist with regular inspections of properties; patrol and monitor for vandalism; perform garbage collection, litter picking and maintenance of amenities
  • Operate various equipment and machinery related to maintenance functions in accordance with applicable legislation, policies and procedures
  • Perform winter snow and ice control functions, as requested

 

Duties specific to Cemeteries:

  • Responsible for grass cutting and grounds maintenance of cemetery properties, including planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds
  • Prepare burial sites in accordance with applicable legislation; tailor grounds for individual and decoration day services
  • Liaise directly with families and funeral directors to perform interment services

 

Duties specific to Trails:

·         Responsible for maintenance of trails, including performing routine maintenance tasks including general repairs to trails, trail heads, roads, bridges, buildings and other facilities

 

As a member of the operational team:

·         Administer defined procedures and recommend solutions to challenges or process improvements

·         Work collaboratively with others to deliver the outcomes as defined; report any challenges to the supervisor

·         Respond to customer service concerns; participating in problem solving and providing information to supervisor, as appropriate

·         Keep daily time sheets for supervisor review and approval

·         Follow prescribed health and safety procedures including wearing personal protective equipment

·         Maintain documentation, databases and corporate records in accordance with policy and divisional practice; consider legislative municipal requirements such as the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)

·         Provide data or input on processes to allow reporting and decision making

·         Perform other related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

·         Secondary school diploma

·         Demonstrated experience in grounds maintenance with emphasis in horticulture, landscape construction, cemetery and/or trails maintenance

·         Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

·         Demonstrated ability to operate hand tools, various machinery and equipment including small tractors and backhoe

·         Effective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills; strong written communication skills; attention to detail and accuracy

·         Demonstrated customer service skills at a level to develop and maintain cooperative/collaborative working relationships both within and outside the organization

·         Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines

·         Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and tact and maintain a high degree of confidentiality at all times, complying with all applicable privacy legislation and local policies and procedures

·         Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, the internet and any other related software

·         Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence

·         Upon a conditional offer of employment, a Criminal Record Check will be required
