Would you like to make a difference in the Environment? The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal initiative to clean-up low-level radioactive waste materials situated in the Municipality of Port Hope (MPH) and the Municipality of Clarington.  The project involves remediating contaminated sites to established clean-up criteria (CC) and consolidating the waste materials in a new engineered mound (one in each community).  The project is sponsored by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), and the project delivery is led by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). The Environmental Technologist works under the direction of the Environmental Technologist Supervisor and the EA Follow-Up Program Lead to implement the Environmental and Biophysical Monitoring Program for the Port Hope and Port Granby Projects through Phases 2 and 3 of the project. The work involves ongoing air, noise, odour, dust, soil, surface water and groundwater monitoring of sites around Port Hope and Port Granby, Ontario. This involves collection of samples, equipment maintenance, documentation and data analysis.  Other duties include coordination with external laboratories and equipment suppliers and preparation of procedural documents to support operational aspects of the program.   

What will you be doing !  

  • Collecting Field-Based Environmental Data.
  • Working in all outdoor conditions collecting field measurements using a variety of instrumentation; collecting samples within prescribed processes and plans; collection, tracking, preparation and analysis of samples for radiological and non-radiological parameters.
  • Carrying out environmental monitoring activities, working in a team or alone, in various outdoor conditions. Completing monitoring to schedule with minimum supervision, and making decisions about sampling based on field conditions (such as weather, safety, equipment or access), and EA follow-up requirements.
  • Following CNL processes to collect samples in the field, using Environmental Instrumentation (value of equipment ranges from $1,000 to $25,000). This includes troubleshooting, hands-on repair and calibration of equipment as required.
  • Preparation of samples for analysis by other CNL Branches and off-site laboratories and/or perform laboratory work.
  • Enter requisitions as requested by the EA Follow-Up Program Team.
  • Responsible for the proper operation of motor operated vehicles and boat while working in the field.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of environmental monitoring equipment and work areas.
  • Upholding quality control by collecting samples and maintaining accurate/complete records in accordance with prescribed processes and plans.
  • Collecting samples following all CNL procedures such as Operating Procedures, Contamination Control Procedures, and Radiation Protection Procedures, as well as following all site access requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate field forms by fully completing all paperwork and keeping detailed notes.
  • Checking and finalizing all paperwork before submitting. This may include downloading data from instrumentation and data preparation and analysis. This includes reviewing data to ensure it is valid.
  • Administering and processing basic, routine technical data and information.
  • Performing routine calculations and documenting results.
  • Identifying/addressing/troubleshooting routine issues.
  • Complying with quality assurance standards.
  • Managing resources such as Environmental Instrumentation and consumables to ensure work schedule is not impacted and steady availability. 
  • Coordinating with PHAI Procurement and external vendors, to ensure Environmental Instrumentation is within calibration limits, fully functional and available as necessary for flow of daily operations. Maintaining purchase orders of consumable items.
  • Demonstrating judicious use of consumables/resources during sampling campaigns.
  • Working with representatives of an external accredited laboratory, to ensure organization of sample shipments and steady availability of sample containers.
  • Managing EA Monitoring Program Documentation and Procedures, assisting in the creation/revision of documentation related to the EA Follow-up program and the analysis of Environmental Datasets.
  • Participating in the creation/revision of Environmental Monitoring Operating Procedures, performing complete analysis of environmental datasets to assist in periodic reporting to stakeholders and preparing technical reports relating to own discipline.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

  What we are looking for : 

  • Education
    • A valid Ontario class “G” (or equivalent) driver’s license.
    • A valid Pleasure Craft Operator card.
  • Experience
    • One to three (1-3) years’ experience in environmental field work and sample collection techniques, including air, noise, groundwater, surface water, sediment, and soil.
    • Other work experiences should include installation, calibration and maintenance of sampling equipment.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Outdoor skills with the operation of GPS systems and knowledge of maps, and operation of other equipment such as hand held tools.
    • Knowledge of chain of custody processes for sample management.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required  
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
