We are looking for a Civil Engineer to be part of providing integrated project management, engineering, design and construction services for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities, and R&D experiments at our Chalk River site. What you will be doing!

  • Being assigned as a design job leader including job management and execution oversight.
  • Providing job updates and status reports to management.
  • Guiding the work of several professional engineers and technologists, coordinating schedules and   assigning tasks to reach an overall objective within cost, quality and time requirements.
  • Providing mentorship and technical oversight to junior staff.
  • Designing of new structures, retrofits and modifications to existing structural engineering systems.
  • Designing and analyzing of custom designed elements for construction support such as below the hook lifting devices, fall arrest systems, shoring system, etc.
  • Performing load assessments on existing structures.
  • Preparing of design documentation including concept reports, design requirements, design   descriptions, design manuals, design guides, technical specifications, and technical notes.
  • Engineering support during the construction, installation and commissioning project phases.
  • Acting as a customer liaison.
  • Providing subject matter expert review and acceptance of designs prepared by outside agencies.
  • Developing engineering specifications and standards facilitating a consistent design approach
  • Supervising engineering deliverables within their assigned section, a possibility.
  • Being responsible for the delivery of engineering deliverables within their section.
  • Mentoring technicians and engineers, a possibility.
  • The function has technical, administrative and management requirements. 
  • The job will involve both an office and field environment

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • At minimum, a Bachelors (Honour) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Experience
    • A few years related engineering working experience in civil/structural engineering in the areas of building design using steel, masonry, timber and reinforced concrete.
    • Experienced in the technical procurement process, including supplier qualification reviews, bid evaluations, review and acceptance of technical deliverables and monitoring contractor performance vs. technical specifications.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Demonstrated performance in providing engineering oversight to various sizes of jobs
    • Demonstrated effective team leadership and team-building skills
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment in technical matters, to routinely solve technical problems and to make independent decisions.
    • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and interact with staff at various levels of the organization.
    • Excellent oral and written English communication skills; previous experience making technical presentations to small and large audiences.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering codes and standards used in the design, construction, and commissioning of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of CSA N286/N285 quality standards.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required  
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

 Location :

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires regular work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site while also permitting the employee to spend the majority of their time working remotely, should they so desire. CNL employees who choose to work remotely the majority of the time are provided with the equipment required to be successful at their remote workplace (laptop, chair, monitor, etc.); however, they are not provided a dedicated onsite office. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley. It affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.   Many surrounding towns, such as Pembroke, Petawawa, and Deep River, provide you with unparalleled outdoor adventures at your doorstep!
