We are looking for an experienced Land Development Strategist who will play a lead role in identifying strategies and opportunities for growth and development of our community. This is a highly cross functional position that nurtures both internal and external relationships that include the City’s Infrastructure departments, Planning department, other development companies, home builders, and other government agencies. We are looking for an accomplished self-starter, who can work across all of these sectors and bring people, ideas, and resources together to transform Lethbridge into a place of cherished experiences and extraordinary opportunities.
The Role:
As our top candidate, you will develop and/or lead consultants in creating statutory plans, comprehensive plans, redevelopment scenarios, and strategies to improve specific aspects of the community. You will provide management, expertise, and support to lead planning approval processes from land use zoning, through to Outline Plans, Area Structure Plans, and development & redevelopment activities – ensuring they align with the vision of the department and goals of City Council.
You will collaborate with a wide variety of internal and external partners; and design and facilitate community/stakeholder engagement opportunities. Your advanced project management skills will be needed to manage multiple consulting contracts simultaneously to ensure projects are delivered on time and within scope and approved budgets. Your success will be driven by your ability to analyze market trends and proactively stay current of development occurring with Alberta, across Canada, and globally. This will include conducting research on topics relating to development and redevelopment opportunities, and preparing related reports and recommendations.
Your professional experience & skillset:
Seasoned planning and project management expertise, and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in managing large scale planning projects. This will be complemented by:
A post-secondary degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Design, Business Administration, Economic Development, or an equivalent field
Advanced knowledge of urban planning practices and contemporary best management practices in community development, as well as proficient analysis and research skills.
A strategic and innovative mindset to critically analyze ideas
Logical problem solving skills and the ability to successfully implement solutions
Superior relationship building skills to collaborate with many groups, along with your well-honed customer service skills
Successful communication and presentation skills, as well as political acumen and diplomacy
This will be complemented by:
Team skills that are welcoming, collaborative and responsive
Adaptability and comfort with change
Advanced organizational skills in successfully managing multiple, time-bound priorities
Financial competence to manage multiple complex project budgets
A general understanding of legal documents such as right of way agreements, easements, and caveats
Ability to deal professionally with individuals at all levels regarding confidential matters
A demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
