About the Role:

In the role of a part-time School Crossing Guard, you will ensure the safety of pedestrians, with a special emphasis on children, as they cross designated school intersections. Your focus will be on monitoring traffic, granting pedestrians the right of way, and following the regulations outlined in the Highway Traffic Act. In this role, you will have the opportunity to create a significant impact every day, safeguarding our most valuable community members – our children. 

What You Will be Doing:

  • Safely escort pedestrians across roadways at designated school crossings, adhering to regulations, policies, and procedures as defined in the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

  • Control and follow all regulations to ensure pedestrians are safely assisted at crossings.

  • Provide exceptional customer service by communicating and enforcing safe crossing rules to the public.

  • Document and report incidents or unsafe conditions.

  • Prioritize emergency vehicle right of way over vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

  • Use required safety equipment and clothing and assist in training new crossing guards.

These responsibilities outline the principal functions of the position and serve as a guiding vision for the role's impact and contribution. 

About You:

Qualifications:

  • Excellent customer service skills with clear and effective communication abilities.

  • Physical ability to move briskly, stand for 60 minutes two times per day in all weather conditions while holding a STOP Sign weighing 5 pounds up high.

  • Remain alert and perform duties quickly and safely.

  • Effective hearing and vision to observe oncoming traffic at a safe distance.

  • Previous experience with the public or children is beneficial.

  • Training on relevant acts and regulations will be provided.

Requirements:

  • Must undergo a Police Vulnerable Sector Check and Medical Evaluation, both expenses covered by the City of St. Catharines.

Training

Training will be provided prior to the start date in one of two sessions on August 20, 2024, and August 27, 2024.

Hourly Rate: $21.80 (Increasing to $23.76 on January 1, 2025)
