What we seek: 

OCHC is currently seeking a dedicated Dispatcher to assist the Community Safety Services and After-Hours Service Delivery teams by providing dispatching services that support the safe and effective responses to calls for services related to security, maintenance, and parking. Under the guidance of the Manager, Community Safety Services Operations, the Dispatcher will receive and prioritize calls, gather and communicate information to team members and ensures the appropriate documentations of each call while showing compassion towards our tenants. 

Dispatcher with OCHC: 

Communicating, understanding, and resolving our tenants’ concerns is a main priority for our organization. As the Dispatcher, you will be at the forefront of our mission to provide solutions for our tenants by collaborating with Community Safety and Operations team, emergency services, and approved contractors. You will be the voice that connects our vibrant community and brings the vision of our organization into reality by ensuring that our community members are safe, acknowledged, and supported. 

As a Dispatcher, some of the things you do will include: 

  • Receive requests for service and supports OCHC’s response through dispatch and ongoing support of required resources 

  • Prioritize requests for service with consideration to guidelines, urgency, safety of staff and public 

  • Support the ongoing coordination of dispatched staff and contracted services 

  • Use applicable software and communication technology to ensure accurate and timely retrieval and documentation of all required information 

  • Understand, explain, and support adherence to procedures and directives by staff in the field 

  • Communicate with appropriate emergency services for assistance as needed 

  • Receive and respond to or transfer calls of an administrative nature from internal staff 

  • Monitor equipment used, report problems and provide support as required

What you bring: 

Education & Experience: 

A typical candidate will have the following qualifications and experience.  Exceptional candidates with different qualifications will be considered at the discretion of the employer if demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability warrant. 

  • Completion of Grade 12 

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in dispatching in a law enforcement or security services environment 

  • Knowledge of dispatch practices and services 

  • Knowledge of geographical areas serviced by OCH, map reading, telephone etiquette, radio protocol, operation of two-way radio 

  • Knowledge of phonetic alphabet and various terminology and codes used by emergency services personnel 

  • Knowledge of standard corporate software and database applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, internet browsers, Computer Assisted Dispatch, Enterpol Records Management System and Northgate 

  • Knowledge of factors present in tenant populations in social housing 

 

Skills and abilities: 

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) 

  • Able to identify problems accurately and identify solutions 

  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple calls 

  • Ability to draw information from various sources 

  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment 

  • Ability to follow protocols and instructions and work without close supervision 

  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain self-motivation 

  • Work in a confidential manner and demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues 

  • Proficiency in the use of information technology such as telecommunication equipment and computer systems 

  • Proficiency in English and French is required 

  • An ability to speak additional languages commonly used by OCHC’s tenants is an asset 

 

Other requirements: 

  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check 

  • Able to work rotational shifts (afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays)
