Who We Are
Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.
The Office of the Ombudsperson is a unit within the University Secretariat portfolio. The Ombudsperson is an independent, confidential resource that promotes fairness for students by providing guidance on rights, responsibilities, and university policies, and by recommending systemic improvements where appropriate.
About the Role
The Ombudsperson at Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a resource for students who operates in accordance with the principles of confidentiality, independence, impartiality, accessibility & inclusivity, which are reflected in the Ethical Principles outlined by the Forum of Canadian Ombudsmen (FCO) and the Standards of Practice adopted by the Association of Canadian College and University Ombudspersons (ACCUO). The Ombudsperson Office (“Office”) is also committed to procedural fairness (natural justice), ensuring University decisions are made through fair, transparent, and equitable processes. The Office helps students understand their rights and responsibilities within the University, explore constructive options for resolving concerns, and prepare to navigate University processes effectively. While the Ombudsperson does not act as an advocate or representative for students, they coach students on presenting their concerns and navigating University processes. Where appropriate, the Ombudsperson may make recommendations to improve University policies, procedures, or practices and to foster dialogue on institution-wide issues affecting students. The Office is funded by SFU but applies the principles of independence from all University, academic, and student government structures. The Ombudsperson reports administratively to the University Secretary and is accountable to the Ombudsperson Advisory Committee to maintain independence and transparency. The Ombudsperson promotes fairness, equity, and respect across the University community. The position does not advocate for any individual case or group, nor does it make, change, or overturn University decisions.
