Temporary Full Time Planning Technician (11-month contract)

Reporting to the Supervisor of Development Approvals, the Planning Technician provides general support to the Planning Section, which includes taking in development applications, responding to Planning phone and email inquiries, coordinating pre-consultation meetings, and processing simple applications. 

 

Key Duties

  • Provides front line customer service including preliminary assessment of development applications, pre-consultation applications, minor variances, and consents to determine completeness and submission adequacy in accordance with policies and procedures, and with Provincial legislation and guidelines.
  • Processes Property Information Requests, Sign Permits (and associated Sign By-law Variances), and assists the Freedom of Information Co-ordinator with FOI requests on behalf of the Planning Section.
  • Works closely with the Planners on the preparation of application circulation materials, including Letters of Acknowledgement and Internal/External Circulation Memos, zoning reviews, planning exhibits, hearing materials, research, and coordination.
  • Updates all development related tracking tables and repository systems (AMANDA and Laserfiche).
  • Calculates and collects the applicable fees for all types of development applications.
  • Provides technical assistance to customers and the general public over the counter, receives and responds to telephone and e-mail inquiries.
  • Engages with the Permit Application Examiner on all zoning inquiries related to building permit applications.
  • Liaises with the By-law Department with respect to planning related complaints and property standard issues as they arise.
  • Remains current with new legislation, policies, and planning practices in order to have the knowledge and skills to explain and apply provisions. 

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Relevant college diploma or university degree in Planning (or a combination of education and relevant experience deemed equivalent).
  • Minimum one (1) year of related municipal experience.
  • Candidate or Full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI), or the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians (CACPT).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Computer experience with Mapviewer, AMANDA, Laserfiche, and AutoCad and GIS applications.
  • Knowledge of planning principles, practices, procedures, standards and relevant legislation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including public presentations and report writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, staff, developers and councilors.
  • Strong organizational, time management, problem solving and planning skills.
  • Ability to provide a clear criminal reference check that is current (completed in the last six months), upon being hired. 

What is Offered to Staff

  • Pay Range: $39.48 - $42.09 per hour
  • Hours of Work: This 11-month contract is a non-union position that works 35 hours per week.   The hours of work are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
