Position Summary

The Senior Specialist, Health & Safety will develop and administer Occupational Health and Safety-related programs in keeping with Seneca’s needs and in compliance with appropriate legislation. They will work with management to ensure relevant Health and Safety policies, procedures and protocols are adhered to and provide strategic and technical advice to management for a broad range of occupational health and safety issues and decisions.

Responsibilities

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Assists with the development and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety policy, procedures and safe work instructions. Help to encourage employee and manager involvement and ownership of safety procedures and programs.
  • Conducts comprehensive risk assessments, inspections and identifies safety culture, environmental factors and operational procedures.
  • Conducts a comprehensive gap analysis against industry standards, identifies opportunities for improvement, and works with management to implement related action plans.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Early Defibrillation (AED) Program.
  • Assist with any other OHS initiatives as required.

Accident Prevention Programs and Compliance

  • Develops and participates in accident prevention programs, policies and procedures.
  • Manages OHS incidents and events to ensure appropriate investigation, corrective actions and reporting to internal and external parties.
  • Ensures Seneca’s compliance with applicable health and safety and environmental legislation and standards and prepares necessary compliance documentation.
  • Collects, analyses and monitors injury data to identify trends.

Risk/Hazard Assessments

  • Conducts health and safety related risk and hazard assessments, job hazard assessments (JHA’s) across Seneca departments and academic schools.
  • Coordinates and conducts Indoor Air Quality Assessments and basic Industrial Hygiene Sampling.

Employee Training

  •  Participates in developing and conducting health and safety educational and awareness programs. Provides other forms of employee training, such as WHMIS training, safe lifting techniques, new employee orientations, workstation set-up, etc.

  • Develops training materials/resources to meet the specific needs of diverse staff groups.

Qualifications

Education

  • Post Secondary Diploma or Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or other related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), Safety Professional (CRSP), or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation preferred.

Experience

  • Two or more years of work experience in occupational health and safety within the public sector.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a unionized environment is an asset. 

Skills

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety legislation, standards and best practices
  • Advanced analytical skills to identify, research and resolve health and safety concerns; ability to interpret analytical/technical reports related to health and safety.  
  • Ability to use and maintain industrial hygiene equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure or in a crisis during emergencies.
  • Excellent organization and project management skills with strong ability to plan, prioritize and execute diverse assigned tasks, and adjust objectives to meet needs.
  • Well-developed client service, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to interact effectively with a multi-cultural/racial/able staff and students.  
  • Access to a reliable vehicle to travel between campuses. 
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.) and Microsoft 365 apps (SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive etc.).
