Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, the position performs duties related to safe and enjoyable rock climbing to groups or individuals of all ages and abilities. This position will provide support for Climbing Instructors, primarily during registered programs, drop-in, and special events. This position works non-traditional hours including weekday, evenings and weekends. Principle duties include:
Assist climbers and other belayers in proper use of climbing harness and how to tie a Figure-8 knot.
Assist with registered climbing programs, drop-in climbing, party packages, group climbing packages, after school programs, summer camps and special event
Ensure belaying is conducted in a safe, positive and comfortable learning environment that encourages participation and personal development.
Knowledge and understanding of rock climbing policies and procedures
Demonstrate strong risk management skills
Monitor climbing wall area to ensure safety of users during operating hours
Ensure the rock climbing wall and climbing equipment is in safe condition; reporting any deficiencies
Assist with maintenance and cleaning of rock climbing wall area and equipment
Provide excellent customer service to participants and general public. Maintain a safe and organized flow in the rock climbing area
Support and promote the HIGH FIVE “principles of healthy child development”.
Attend and participate in required staff training and scheduled meetings
Adhere to Corporate Policies and Procedures
This position works non-traditional hours including afternoons, weekends and evenings
Other duties as assigned
Secondary School Diploma or minimum age 16+ years and currently enrolled in Secondary School
Belay certified
Minimum 1 year instructional experience working with children, youth and adults of all abilities
Excellent indoor rock climbing knowledge
Excellent customer service skills that demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally when interacting with staff, participants, parents/guardians and general public
Standard first aid with AED /CPR C
HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) certification is a requirement
Successful candidates who are new hires and/or who have not performed in this position previously will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal reference check, with vulnerable sector screening, dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment
