We are currently looking for a Communications Consultant to serve on our Tenant Communications team. In this role, you will report to the Manager, Tenant Marketing & Communications, and provide communications services to support Toronto Community Housing’s strategic communications objectives, business priorities, and reinforce TCHC’s tenant-focused culture
 
What you’ll do

  • Write, edit, and publish communication materials aimed at tenants, staff, the media, stakeholders and the general public
  • Provide strategic communications counsel to corporate divisions, project leads and unit managers
  • Prepare key messages, presentations, speaking notes, and handouts to ensure maximum effectiveness and consistency with strategic priorities
  • Prepare a range of communications including: digital and social media content, news releases, speeches, web copy and media kits
  • Develop communication plans and strategies that support the company’s strategic priorities
  • Maintain good working relationships with internal and external contacts and proactively identify communications opportunities.  
  • Represent Toronto Community Housing with community agencies and private sector partners in planning and executing joint communications
  • Represent Toronto Community Housing interests with various stakeholders, including community agencies, tenants, the public and the media
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of various communications tactics, messages, and approaches
  • Provide counsel and support to executive, managers and staff with respect to media and other communications initiatives
  • Implement and manages content and communication vehicles that promote two-way communication with residents and the public
  • Proactively works with management and liaises with other members of the Tenant Marketing and Communications team in identifying potentially contentious issues in order to prepare key messages and execute appropriate communications strategies

  • Recommend strategies to minimize risk and maximize understanding of Toronto Community Housing’s initiatives, policies and programs
  • Identify opportunities to create events that reflect and reinforce Toronto Community Housing’s strategic priorities
  • Provide event support, including by taking photos/videos for corporate products, coordinating event logistics, and liaising with external vendors

What you’ll need

  • Degree from a recognized university or college in English, Corporate Communications, Social Sciences, Public Relations or Journalism, or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and job experience
  • 3 to 5 years business writing experience, including 2 to 3 years strategic communications experience within social media communications, media relations, stakeholder relations and issues management
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and writing social media content, blogs, briefing materials, news releases, backgrounders, Q&A, speeches and other communication tools
  • Experience conceiving and developing media relations, social media, public relations and issues management strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver expected outcomes in a results-oriented environment with multiple projects, strict deadlines and changing or competing priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Strong networking and relationship building skills 
  • A strong team player who is also able to work independently 
  • High degree of judgment and discretion; ability to analyze, problem solve and mediate complex situations with multiple stakeholders
  • Exceptional writing and editing, project management and presentation skills
  • Experience developing and implementing social media strategies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal communication, interview and research skills.
  • Creative, flexible and innovative approach to meeting the communications needs of a complex organization
  • Knowledge of community development principles and a solid understanding of key social issues faced by Toronto Community Housing staff, residents, stakeholders and partners
  • Proficient with computer applications including Adobe Creative Suite, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Drupal, Sprout Social, etc.
  • Ability and sensitivity in providing respectful service to diverse populations
  • Experience shooting and editing still photographs and video would be an asset.
