Job Responsibilities 

  • Assist in preparing urban design, built form, and public realm strategies, policies, studies, standards, and guidelines.
     
  • Participate in updating policies, procedures, standards and by-laws related to urban design, built form, public realm, landscape design, community development and site development matters.
     
  • Assist in providing urban design expertise in delivering and supporting design team and department studies, corporate strategic initiatives and capital projects.
     
  • Assist in evaluating on the suitability of urban design elements for development applications and recommend modifications based on sound urban design practice and principles, as well as adhere to the policies and requirements of the Town.
     
  • Assist in developing town policy and implementing guidelines related to urban design to be incorporated into the Official Plan, Secondary Plans.
     
  • Assist in developing formal project documents including project charters and work plans.
     
  • Conducts research, develops recommendations, prepares reports and delivers presentations.
     
  • Recommends and implements creative site design solutions supportive of town’s urban design policies and guidelines.
     
  • Reviews of urban design master plans, provides recommendations and advice on implementation. 
     
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a university degree in Urban Design, Architecture or Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Geography or a related discipline. 
     
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills. 
     
  • Working knowledge in Geographic Information Systems. 
     
  • Ability to interpret various types of data and recognize, investigate and remedy discrepancies. 
     
  • Excellent written, graphic, and oral communication skills including reports and presentations. 
     
  • Innovative and strong critical thinker with attention to detail. 
     
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member. 
     
  • An emerging understanding of legislation, policy and implementation instruments would be an asset. 
     
  • Ability to generate drawings, 3D models, graphics and illustrations to communicate urban design concepts and details.
     
  • Student membership, or eligibility for membership, with Ontario Association of Architects, Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, Ontario Professional Planners Institute and/or related professional organization. would be an asset.
