OVERVIEW
The Improvement Engineer is a development role for new graduates of a recognized engineering program. Successful candidate(s) will be engaged in projects that will have a positive impact on the efficiency and/or sustainability of various areas of the business.
Improvement Engineer will work primarily within the Technical Services and Engineering Department, but will conduct projects in conjunction with Maintenance, Production,
This position is designed as an entry level position to springboard successful candidates to other positions within the mill as opportunities become available by growing skills in team work, leading teams, lean manufacturing tools and union relations. Possible future positions could include operations leadership, reliability, planning, maintenance, etc.
They will work on the following type of projects:
EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS
– Design/Install/Programming of Variable Frequency Drives
– Development of upgrading plans for critical communication and control equipment
– Design/Installation of Compressed Air System
– Execute energy reduction projects (both thermal and electrical) to reduce the mill’s electrical demand and boiler fuel needs
– Implement management of change protocols into project executions
– Piping/Design Modifications to Thermal Mechanical Pulping Water Systems
– Pump Optimization to Reduce Equipment Damage and Improve Energy Efficiency
– Paper machine chemical retention aid application optimization from the delivery of produce to the process through product performance on paper machines
– Design/Install PLC Control Systems Paper Machine 2/ Thermal Mechanical Pulping Process
– Safety System review, update and implementation
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must have:
– Completed a recognized engineering program between May 2023 and May 2025. Preference will be given to individuals with electrical and mechanical engineering degrees, but will not be limited to those disciplines
– A passion for continuous improvement and a curiosity to explore creative solutions to problems
– An interest in working with a large manufacturer in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador
with growth potential and opportunities across Canada.
– Open to gaining knowledge and training in specialized areas like Lean Six Sigma (LSS), Root Cause Analysis
– Proficient in Excel or any other additional data management software (PI, Envoy, etc.)
RESPONSIBILITIES
– Determine value associated with solving problems that close the gap between budgeted and actual results
– Utilize lean principles to develop action plans to close operational gaps:
· Develop measurements and analyze parameters relating to the process in question
· Facilitating continuous improvement activities such as Kaizens, brainstorming, troubleshooting activities
· Working closely with various departments in the mill to implement actions from continuous improvement activities
· Developing measures/checks to ensure gains are sustained
– As required, assist or lead in development/design of capital projects or other initiatives
– Ensure all documentation related to trails is completed appropriately to maximize scientific research and experimental development tax credits
– Provide data analysis and reporting as required
– Continually grow and develop while working toward a professional engineer designation.
