Reporting to the Intellectual Property Operations Manager, the primary purpose of the Intellectual Property Specialist is to enable the creation and day-to-day implementation of the CNL IP Plans as applied to CNL’s diverse lines of business. These plans arise by integrating business, R&D and legal perspectives to ensure that CNL adequately protects AECL’s intellectual property and meets its obligations under the IP License Agreement.
Work with the IPO Manager, business and R&D lines to create and implement plans consistent with overall IP Strategy and Policy
Work across the organization to identify and assess invention disclosures, manage the IP protection decision-making processes, support the commercial exploitation of IP and drive interest and engagement in protecting innovation across the organization
Work with external legal counsel to prepare and prosecute patent applications, including transforming invention reports into full patent applications, complete with necessary figures and diagrams.
Carry out patent Freedom to Operate studies for CNL’s commercial activities in identified areas of concern
Map, understand and manage IP rights arising within or accessed by CNL, be they owned, licensed or belonging to a third party
Conduct prior art and white space research including web, patent, and literature searches in order to assess the patentability of CNL’s inventions.
Develop and present education materials and programs on CNL IP Policy, invention disclosure submission and the IP management process for CNL employees.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry or a related field.
At least five (5) years overall experience in intellectual property identification and protection.
Competent in using patent search tools for freedom to operate, patentability and landscape analysis
Experience in an R&D environment would be a strong bonus
Patent agent or willingness to pursue patent agent status would be a strong bonus
Excellent organizational, administrative and communication skills
Ability to synthesize technical knowledge and translate it into the language of intellectual property protection and exploitation
Ability to effectively work with internal and external staff, senior managers, industry representatives, sponsors and legal counsel
