Ability Management Specialist

The Ability Management Specialist provides case management support and direction to employees and stakeholders in facilitating the safe and timely return to work for both occupational employee injuries and illnesses. This role coordinates health care professionals, insurance carriers and internal departments to ensure claims are processed and return to work plans are developed and implemented. The Specialist assists in the development and implementation of education programs and ergonomic education for illness prevention.

This role is based in North Vancouver and reports to the Manager, Ability Management & Wellness.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Crafts and assess graduated return to work (GRTW) schedules. Conducts weekly updates and communicates with returnees, supervisors and healthcare providers and insurance carriers to ensure the GRTW programs are being followed.
  • Acts as an internal resource with regards to addressing health concerns, answering questions and providing treatment options and referrals as required. Educates, coordinates and sets up appointments for independent medical/ functional assessments with regards to occupational health and safety.
  • Supports Production/Operations and Safety to analyze physical demands and risks of the job. Arranges ergonomic assessments, assesses workplace risks and hazards and prepares recommendations for management consideration.
  • Facilitates WorkSafe BC processes through prevention, early intervention, regular contact with employees, and follows up by providing information and treatment resources as necessary.
  • Assists in implementing new programs and processes related to return to work.
  • Promotes employee health and ensures the best outcomes for injured and ill employees.
  • Performs additional assigned duties.

Qualification Requirements

  • Completion of a Return to Work Coordinator or Disability Management Certificate through NIDMAR or CARMHA.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or health related field desirable.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Disability Case Management in a heavy industrial environment including experience in ergonomics and risk/assessment.
  • Experience in OSH policy development, revision and implementation.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Knowledge of Privacy legislation related to preparing, disclosing and handling information of a confidential and/or sensitive nature.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Canada Labour Code.
  • Experience working with unionized employees, preparing medical questionnaires/interpreting medical to identify appropriate medical accommodations, experience with attendance wellness management
  • Knowledge in ergonomics and risk/assessment.
  • Ability to build and implement a return to work plans consistent with workplace requirements.
  • Time management skills including prioritizing and ability to balance multiple caseloads.
  • Understanding of anatomy, physiology and concepts of strength and balance training
  • Understanding of claims regulations and processes.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills including negotiation and active listening.
  • Ability to build relationships of trust and respect with a diverse group of employees.
