Senior Specialist, Project Engineering

Under the direction of the Director, Functional Engineering the Senior Project Engineering Specialist is responsible for developing the Functional Engineering inputs for the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), including identifying the interfaces with Supply Chain Management (SCM) for Vendor Furnished Information (VFI) required to progress the design.

Following creation of the IMS the Senior Project Engineering Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining the detailed Functional Engineering operations schedules. They will act as the point of contact with the Planning department and will manage and coordinate all communication and data exchange required to support the IMS regular updates.


  • Responsible for developing and maintaining the applicable functional engineering planning capabilities (process & tools and internal performance metrics)
  • In partnership with Functional Engineering Managers and Leads, develops resource plans, generate resource profiles to assess requirements vs design capacity and propose solutions to mitigate potential gaps
  • Liaise with external partner engineering teams to ensure that the functional engineering work are delivered
  • Provides comprehensive planning / scheduling leadership expertise.
  • Provides support to establish budgets and schedules.
  • Based on IMS, develops and maintains departmental detailed operational schedules utilizing Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
  • Collaborates with Functional Engineering Managers and Leads to collect, build, and maintain teams resource profiles
  • Assess teams capacity vs. requirements and highlight the potential variations that can’t be mitigated using scheduling techniques.
  • Collects weekly actuals for schedule updates, assess performance vs. plan and report deviations; submit the vital data to the Planning department for IMS updates.
  • Assess weekly/monthly Estimate At Completion (EAC) metrics and report to Functional Engineering Director and Managers on team performance, trends, forecasts and/or variations that require further assessment and/or mitigation actions.

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Business.
  • Previous experience with planning systems using Primavera 6 and/or Microsoft Project
  • 5 to 7 years in a complex engineering environment.
  • Shipbuilding experience is required.
  • Certification by an accredited society in Planning, Production Control and/or Project Management is highly desirable.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Advanced technical knowledge and engineering skills.
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding design with a detailed understanding of the relationship between engineering design activities, procurement, and production.
  • Solid understanding of schedule development and EVM methodology.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership and influencing skills and practices.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently to develop solutions to scheduling problems.
  • Strong analytical skills to capture and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of document control systems and databases.
  • Good organizational skills including the ability to maintain organization in a changing environment, multi-task and prioritize.
  • Exercise sound judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the crucial job functions.
  • PC proficiency required. Knowledge of Primavera, Microsoft Project, Power BI, SharePoint, etc.
