Senior Project Engineer (ESS)

The Project Engineer is responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary engineering team to drive the delivery of the engineering work from concept through basic design, functional design, detail design, planning, construction and ultimately to achieve acceptance, ensuring that all engineering scope of work for the project is completed, to meet cost and schedule requirements. The role provides a comprehensive project view to support engineering teams meet their commitments, and address issues, mitigate risks and enhance opportunities. The position reports to the Senior Manager, Project Engineering.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

Duties & Accountabilities

  • Applies a project management approach to complete pre-production and production support activities, including work performed by major subcontractors, and ensure the efficient delivery of engineering outputs.
  • Supports the Project Engineering Manager with Control Account Management of engineering scope for assigned projects. Conducts regular analyses of engineering performance and proactively identifies and addresses variances.
  • Drives timely closure of technical issues, risks and opportunities raised by the project, so as to ensure that all engineering deliverables and inputs to other stakeholders are achieved and meet (or exceed) commitments.
  • Responsible for application of an appropriate engineering maturity management culture and appropriate engineering lifecycle management, aligned with project objectives. Ensures maturity targets are agreed with key collaborators.
  • Helps coordinate Gate Reviews (Design Reviews) that are conducted at appropriate points during the Project lifecycle.

Education & Experience

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree preferably in engineering or scientific subject area or a similar experience with a strong technical background.
  • 10 or more years of experience in Engineering or Technical Project Management, preferably with knowledge of ship/maritime systems or specialized knowledge of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, communications or a related domain.
  • Proven experience managing people and budgets.
  • Experience of supplier technical management.
  • Professional Engineer with a recognized, accredited institution, or working towards achieving such status.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Self-starter with excellent communications and organisational skills
  • Technical knowledge and engineering skills including use of analysis tools and knowledge of analytical methods
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems
  • Outstanding analytical skills with the ability to analyze data and confirm its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process
  • Strong technical writing and interpersonal skills including the ability to produce and communicate clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports
  • Solid understanding of CAD software, 3D Modelling and Visualization tools, document control systems and databases is a plus
  • Strong communication skills including verbal, written, listening and presentation
  • Good organizational skills
  • Availability and willingness to travel if needed
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules
  • Exercise good judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the crucial job functions.
  • PC proficiency required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
