Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Athletics and Recreation, The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for working with the Sport Coordinator to co-develop and manage an academically and athletically successful program, that is a perennial contender for an OCAA Championship with the ultimate goal of medaling/winning a Championship. The Head Coach supervises the team’s part time coaching staff, ensures the coaches are fulfilling the practice, game and recruitment plans, college/OCAA/CCAA administrative rules, policies and requirements are completed in a timely manner; and communicates effectively with the Athletics & Recreation staff. The Head Coach supports and mentors the values of excellence in academics and athletics, character development and leadership.

Seneca did not participate in men’s rugby during the 2021-22 OCAA season, and is looking for a dynamic coach and proven recruiter to rebuild the program to participate in September 2022.

Responsibilities:

Team Management

  • Develops a three year and annual full plan of off season/pre-season/in season and post season practices, with the goal of annually winning OCAA Championships and competing for Championships.
  • In rebuilding years, ensures progress in team success and player recruitment.
  • In collaboration with the Varsity Coordinator, the Coach identifies appropriate exhibition games to enhance the season and presents to Manager for approval.
  • In collaboration with the Fitness and Mental Skills coaches, builds fitness and team cohesiveness sessions into the schedule and ensuring every student athlete and every staff member is treated with respect.
  • Responsible for game preparation and execution, ensuring game video assessments of opponents have been analysed and utilized to inform effective offensive and defensive strategies.
  • Works with the Athletic Therapy staff to ensure complete adherence to CCES and concussion protocols including appropriate Return to Play protocol.
  • Attends Coaches Meetings set by the Department.
  • Participates in Season End Evaluation Meetings with team, coaching staff and Department and provides recommendations/strategies for upcoming season.
  • Adheres to budget restrictions and financial policies as designated by the department/college.

Recruitment

  • Responsible for recruiting student athletes who will be first and foremost, academically successful and represent the college in a positive light; secondly be players that contribute to team success both on and off the court. Coaches must be able to convert offers to acceptances of the appropriate number of key, core and role players each year.
  • Maintain compliance with the OCAA, OFSSA and college recruitment rules and processes.
  • Hosts high school and club tournaments to identify prospective key student athletes.
  • In Collaboration with the Varsity Coordinator, reviews scholarship budget and annual plan.
  • Complies with the Seneca’s scholarship model and financial limitations while attracting “all-star” quality student athletes.

Supervision

  • Assigns roles to each of the part time staff and holds them accountable to deliver the skill, tempo and attitude we consistently require in practices and games.
  • Ensures all part time coaches have fully complied with all necessary training modules (Seneca/OCAA/CCAA).
  • Motivates, mentors, instructs and ensures consistent disciplines student athletes in game skills, team play, team comportment that meets the values in STING360, ant the expectation of the college, OCAA and the CCAA.
  • Responsible for team and coaching staff behaviour on road trips and at any team function and ensures full compliance to all conduct policies, including but not limited to Harassment, Bullying, Sexual Assault, OCAA Code of Ethics and STING 360.

Academic Monitoring

  • Encourages academic success through monthly touch point meetings with student athletes.
  • Ensures a weekly Team Study Hall is attended by athletes and supervised by an assistant coach, where deemed appropriate by the Manager.

Fundraising, Community Relations, Alumni

  • Ensures that teams wishing to fundraise are fully compliant with College and OCAA rules and policies and approved by the Manager.
  • Co-plans and implements activities that include alumni, club/high school sport

Qualifications:

Education

  • Minimum of a completed Secondary School Diploma.
  • Working towards ADV Development Coach/ Level 2 NCCP or equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience working as a Head Coach with competitive athletes.

Skills

  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, with a demonstrated ability to build effective and collaborative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution and judgment skills.
