Definitions
Indigenous Peoples


The term “Indigenous Peoples of North America / Turtle Island” includes persons who are First Nations (Status, Non-Status), Inuit or Métis, as well as Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian Peoples.


The UN definition of the term "Indigenous" includes the following considerations:



  • Self-identification as Indigenous at the individual level

  • Historical continuity with pre-colonial and/or pre-settler societies

  • Strong link to territories and surrounding natural resources

  • Distinct social, economic or political systems

  • Distinct language, culture and beliefs

  • Form non-dominant groups of society

  • Resolve to maintain and reproduce their ancestral environments and systems as distinctive peoples and

  • communities AND/OR

  • Recognized by Indigenous community as a member


Racialized Persons


Individuals (other than Indigenous Peoples, defined above) who self-identify as non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour, regardless of place of birth or citizenship.


Women


Individuals who self-identify as women.


Persons with Disabilities


Individuals who have a long term or chronic physical, mental, emotional/psychiatric or learning disability, which may result in a person experiencing disadvantage or barriers concerning any or all aspects of employment.
